The GarBar

Just south of campus sat a turn-of-the century two-story house with a carriage house in the back. The owners are avid game dayers who love to host for the college’s game days. The existing carriage house was small, only about 20’x20’ and not enough space for entertaining for a sports game. The client requested a large seating area, small bathroom, a bar and a lofted space in their new, larger garage.

Our design team came up with a similar building form to that of the existing carriage house, only at a larger scale. The new garage is about 25’x32’ and sits into the grade to create a sunken outdoor patio in between the garage and the house to the south. We kept the original idea of a large loft yet set it back so that it can overlook into the lower space. The garage doors are installed so that they sit high in the space when opened and the large sliding door to the south connects the garage to the patio.
